In Painting We Trust

Opening: Thursday, February 2nd 2023, 6 pm

Duration of the exhibition: February 3rd – March 25th, 2023

With the exhibition In Painting We Trust, Gallery Andreas Binder is showing works by artist Daniel Man for the third time. Also in the current exhibition, painting, works on paper and wall painting in the exhibition space created by him merge into a space-bound and interacting overall work of art.

The lockdown period two years ago marked a new phase for Daniel Man: daily, simple black-and-white drawings gradually evolved into new, large-scale canvas works, built up with deliberation and in format-filling layers. Each layer emerges from the correspondence with the already existing pictorial elements.

He himself calls this working process „censored form finding“. The picture receives, so to speak, from the outside again and again a new frame, which erases already existing elements or brings them into a different weighting, until a „final“ state is reached. The „fast“ work with paper cut or on the wall, which the artist knows mainly from his graffiti time 1984 to 2000, has thus receded into the background. He works mainly in acrylic, and also again increasingly with the airbrush technique familiar to him from earlier times.

With the outdoor art projects and the creation of NFTs, digital vector drawing has taken hold: this technique comes into its own in the exhibition, where a collaboration project between the artist and Munich jazz singer Ada Morghe is shown in the form of the video clip for the song „The Story“. The video is a work by Daniel Man.

The title In Painting We Trust is an allusion to the veracity of contemporary painting – cue digital painting, artificial intelligence as a new creative entity, the NFT hype, etc. What, other than the haptic reality standing in front of a (painted) reality, can we currently hold on to?

The title also ironically attacks the slogan „in god we trust“ on the American dollar bill. The view overseas, just like the global economic form of our present (with the dollar as a „landmark“), permanently prompts us to ask the question of truth and truthfulness.

A catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition.

At the same time as the exhibition in the gallery, Daniel Man’s works can also be seen in the group exhibition POLYCHROM until March 12 in „Halle 1 – Raum für Kunst im Glaspalast“ in Augsburg.
